Welcome

Geometry is all around us!

Wherever we look we see geometry in action. Understanding geometry is important, because we can use it to help us in our lives.

Geometry is part of the maths curriculum and at some point in Year 9 your class may do the Geometric Reasoning Unit provided by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES).

The unit requires a lot of listening. If your listening skills are not as advanced as your mathematics you may not be able to show how well you can do. This set of ICT resources will help you.

The work you will do here is based on the original Geometric Reasoning Unit. Instead of just listening to the information you can watch it on screen, and use a glossary of mathematical words to check your understanding.

There are also lots of short exercises to make sure you have understood the ideas and language of geometry. You can take your time and repeat things to help you understood them fully.

The multimedia environment makes this learning pathway an exciting way to find out about geometry and will be useful to any student who wants to strengthen their understanding of key concepts and terms in geometry.

Getting Started

There are three types of activities:

Visualisations – these are demonstrations of ‘geometry facts’

Build-ups – these use geometry facts to solve problems

Geometry problems – use what you have learned to solve a problem

We think you will get most out of them by working with someone so you can discuss the problems and explain your understanding as you do them. You can also work on your own or with the help of an adult. You can share your solutions with the online community using 'Share It'.

When you have successfully completed the activities you should have a better understanding of some key geometry facts and the language used to talk about them. Then you will be in a much stronger position to tackle the Geometric Reasoning Unit.

We hope you enjoy them!
